First Indian web browser 'Epic'

Bangalore: Indians have a new cause to celebrate with the launch of the first Indian made web browser aptly called 'Epic'. Released by a Bangalore-based software firm, Hidden Reflex, Epic is based on the Mozilla platform. 

The unique feature that sets Epic apart from other browsers is that it has a built-in antivirus protection. The integrated antivirus and antispyware has been powered by ESET. 

The web browser can be customized as per the user's desire. You can change the background and themes according to your preference. And there are over 1,500 free themes to choose from. The browser's has a number of apps in its sidebar like Twitter, Facebook, Orkut etc. You can directly launch them from the sidebar. 

The Epic is highly Indian in its look and feel. The 'Indic' app in the browser lets you type in 12 Indian languages. 

The browser makers claim maximum privacy by giving features such as one-click private data deletion, flash cookie deletion built-in and no storage of browsing history. Faster downloads and browsing are some of the other claims made by the Epic developers. So what are you waiting for? Go check and experience it for yourself. This is the story of the growth of the personal computer industry. The movie while based on historical fact, did alter things a bit for dramatic reasons. The Movie begins with IBM in the early 1980's, the big brother in the computer world that everyone else feared. Everyone dressed alike at IBM, company songs and jingles filled the air, and men in suits were everywhere.
Steve Jobs along with his friend who he calls "Waz" delight in working with computers. They eventually form their own company, Apple Computers and begin making computers in a garage. There is just one problem, Hewlett Packard has the choice of first rights on anything that "Waz" develops. Fortunately for Apple, Hewlett Packard hated the puny Apple machines so the mechanisms of progress continued. A venture capitalist one day drops by the garage and offers $50,000 in venture capital. Apple was up and running.
Meanwhile Bill Gates was off in school doing wild things. He slept in his clothes, never could find his ties, and dreamed of computers and power. Bill Gates formed a company called Microsoft that made software such as operating systems. During one key meeting with IBM, Bill Gates sells IBM on the idea of using Microsoft's new operating system "DOS" as the operating system for all IBM machines. The only catch was that Microsoft would retain rights to the software and could sell it to other companies. IBM reasoned that hardware not software is where the money is at, so they agree. Microsoft had no operating system to sell at all though! They promptly buy one from a reclose for $50,000 and the Microsoft dynasty begins.
At the Apple camp Steve Jobs is invited to see the graphical user interface which has been developed by Xerox. Xerox had developed the mouse, and standard interface styles we all know today. But the company big whigs thought it was a silly idea and agreed to let Apple look at everything they had. Apple naturally stole everything they could.
Over at Microsoft, Bill Gates fears Apple's expansive growth, and travels to Apple headquartes to talk of an alliance. Bill weasels his way into the heart of Steve Jobs, Apples founder and has access to Apples new machines. After reverse engineering and a few modifications, Windows is born. Apple discovers this during a speech touting Apples new advertisement campaign for the Macintosh. Bill Gates yells at Steve Jobs for the first time. The great rivalry between Windows, and Mac is born.
In the movie Steve Jobs split his company, Apple into two camps. One the old Apple computer camp, and the other the new Macintosh development camp. After seeing this effect on the company, Steve Jobs is forced to leave his position at Apple. Years later the movie picks up with Steve Jobs back in command of Apple who now has partnered with Microsoft and Bill Gates This was a made for TV movie by Turner but it was an excellent movie.

Google bringing Web to TV set

Internet giant Google is out to expand its kingdom to the living room with an ambitious new service that lets people mesh television viewing with surfing the Web.

"Google TV," developed in partnership with technology titans Sony, Intel and Logitech, fuses the freedom of the Internet with television programming.

Google executives vowed their TV platform will succeed where offerings such as Apple TV have foundered.

"Google TV is a new platform that we believe will change the future of television," Google group product manager Rishi Chandra said after unveiling the new service at a software developers conference in San Francisco.

"Users don't have to choose between TV and Web; they can have both."

Google TV, which is powered by Google's Android software and Chrome Web browser, can be accessed using upcoming Web-enabled televisions from Sony or set-top boxes from Logitech that route Web content to existing TV sets.

Sony and Logitech said the sets and boxes will be available in the United States in time for the year-end holiday shopping season and be rolled out internationally next year.

Google TV, which promises to extend the Internet search and advertising giant's reach into the lucrative TV ad market, "combines the best of what TV has to offer and the best of what the Web has to offer," Chandra said.

"To the user it doesn't matter where I get my content, whether it be live TV, DVR, or the Web," Chandra said. "They just want access to it."

Google-owned online video service YouTube is adapting a viewer to optimize playback on Google TV.

Initially, advertising served on Google TV will be the same as seen now by television viewers or Web surfers but the Internet firm said it is pondering ways to tailor advertising to the platform.

Google TV product manager Salahuddin Choudhary said in a blog post that Google TV will allow viewers to get "all the (TV) channels and shows you normally watch and all of the websites you browse all day.

"With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV -- it can be a photo slide-show viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more," Choudhary said.

Google is not the first technology company to attempt to unite the TV set and the Internet and and a number of electronics manufacturers already offer Web-enabled televisions or digital set-top boxes.

Yahoo! jumped into the Internet television arena more than a year ago, teaming with set makers including Sony, Samsung, VIZIO, and LG to build-in software that let viewers link directly to designated websites.

Yahoo! responded to the Google announcement with word that it is expanding to new devices to expand its reach.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the next phase of the Internet revolution will be televised," said Yahoo! Connected TV chief architect Ronald Jacoby.

Logitech boxes, which are powered by Intel Atom computer chips, will feature computer keyboards that act as Google TV remote controls. On-screen home pages will let people search television programming as they do the Internet.

Sony chief executive Howard Stringer described it as "a very big deal."

"I can't stress that enough," Stringer said on stage. "When you put all this, as we've done for the fall, into the world's first Internet television, the opportunities are, in a sense, just mind boggling."

Pricing for the TV sets or the set-top boxes was not disclosed.

Sony is among the electronics companies that have brought Internet-capable televisions to market, but those sets have typically been limited to letting people access specific websites such as Yahoo! or YouTube.

"This is a much broader platform," Stringer said of Google TV. "This is a much more robust platform which is expandable and grows. It's going to be an eye opener."

Google TV is an ambitious undertaking and it will take a long time for its fate to play out, according to Gartner research vice president Ray Valdes.

"If anybody can pull this off, Google can," the analyst said. "There are obstacles to overcome and I don't see a clear path in the short term."

Google TV needs to be the exception to a rule that it is very difficult to move broadcast television into the interactive Digital Age, according to Valdes.

"It took a lot to make this happen," said Google chief executive Eric Schmidt. "It is much harder to marry a 50-year-old technology and a brand new technology than those of us in the new technology thought."
